Boom de yada

I love this commercial
I love making stuff
I love long naps
in the mid-day sun
I love the whole world
Well, almost everything
boom de yada boom de yada
I love animals
but mostly furry ones
I love warm pears
that sat on a dash board
I love the whole world
and all the adventures
boom de yada boom de yada
I love driving
but not the cost of fuel
I love snuggling
even though I drool
I love the whole world
but not really grad school
boom de yada boom de yada

Oh, I see you have caught me photographing things.

My job allows me the use of a pretty nice camera. Last year I spent a lot of time figuring out how to take pictures of toes hairs on bats, but this year I am taking lots of pictures that I like...

For example, this is a red bat (Lasiurus borealis) that I call Scarlet. We have had Scarlet in captivity since early this spring, she had been attacked by a blue jay in St. Louis. Later, we were surprised to find out that she was expecting! Last week she gave birth to three healthy babies.

She nurses her pups and we hand feed her twice a day. Eventually, we hope to release Scarlet and her pups in the very yard they were rescued from.

In other news, I have finally decided what to do with the yarn my lovely boyfriend gave me for Christmas. Its local natural alpaca!

But it's gonna be the Love Shawl. You can't tell in these pictures (and you can barely tell in real life) that there are raised hearts and our initials knitted in there. It's gonna be special!

Oh look, its a baby big brown bat named Nat! This one is a rescue bat, too. Nat is an orphan that now lives in my co-worker's bra. I wish I was lying. We feed our orphan babies a special milk replacement concoction and keep them warm with our own body heat sometimes... thus the bra thing.

I've been obsessed with knitting grocery bags. Here's the latest! I plan on giving this to boyfriend's grand-momma.

It turned out better than the last one, of which I will not be posting photos, thank you very much.
I improvised a duck!

It only lives with me for a few more days before it goes to a deserving child.

I think thats about it for now. I am really excited to post more pictures so my friends can check out what I am up to!

One year and five days

Boy howdy, bet you thought I died.

Well, I didn't.

I just stopped blogging and started baying attention to more important stuff. And it worked out great! I have a fabulous new boyfriend... for the better part of a year (10 months, if you are counting). I worked at a cafe for awhile, I became proficient at baking, making jellies, and canning. I had a little marmalade making business going for a minute. I started competing in pinball on the local level, started playing wiffle ball and moved in to a house (and out of a house) with 3 other girls. Now I am living in Northeast MO with the bats (and floods). I am looking for a big girl job and thats going to be wonderful when I find something that is just the right fit.

Things are grand.

And how are you?

P.S. that shawl from the last post is now one singular glove. the other is waiting to be made, but I've been busy.

Funny things and not funny things

Here is what is not funny. I have a lot of shit to do and I can't seem to concentrate long enough to do anything at all. That is very bad.

I started a new knitting project because of my inability to sit down and write a thesis. Here is the shawl that I started with souvenier Blacksburg yarn. It comes from a sheep named Andy and it is native to Virginia, which is why it fits the bill as souvenier yarn. The yarn shop there did not have any fleece for me to spin but this yarn is less work and was comparably priced. I am still working on the "Clappy" which has turned out to be a great knit to take along in the field. The shawl that you see in this photo is a simple garter prairie shawl, the pattern is in folk shawls (one of the best books I have ever bought, actually) I am anticipating this shawl flying off of the needles because it is so easy, but knowing me, I'll get going on it and then decide I would rather start something else. I the attention span of a fly.

I am leaving town to catching bats in northern Missouri, near the Iowa border. I anticipate the capture rate will be low, but it might afford me some time to actually write. Which I will not do.

Here is the funny thing, though. When I was in VA during my death defying solo expedition across the eastern United States I visited the Cascades National Scenic Trail natural area. They make you PAY to use the parking lot. Three dollars! Well between Jessie, Jason and myself we only had a $5 so I just wrote them a note asking them to send my change. I am a smart ass, remember.

Perhaps you can see that they got my note and sent the change and a nice letter saying they normally don't do that kind of thing. In fact he said "Although normally we do not refund the difference, in your case, we will send you the $2 in cash." I knew I was special. The gentleman's name who sent the note Robert Duggan. He is the Collections Officer for the Forest Service there. If you can find time next time you are in the Blacksburg area I think you should stop by the Cascades and leave Robert a note. It makes his day a little brighter I am sure.

This is why, this is why, this is why I need a spinning wheel.

Let me begin by telling you something awesome. I got a MacBook yesterday, bitches. That's right. I wasn't sure how it would be, with being a PC user for my whole life. But I do like the ability to take pictures of myself right here on my computer. As for everything else, well, I haven't figured out how to do aything else. But I will not be deterred from blogging.

On the knitting front, I wish I could say I've been busy but the truth is, I haven't been. I told you I finished zee reeb varmer? I did. It looks kind of silly but I luh luh love it.

I have been working of honing my drop spinde skills with my Spring Break souvenier roving. See what mama spun?

The colors look a little crazy in front porch light, but you are seeing purple, green, and gold. This combonation should have said Mardi Gras to me, but for some reason it didn't when I was plopped down on the floor of some random yarn shop in Asheville, NC.

All it said then was "Buy me! Buy me! And that drop spindle over there! Buy that, too! forget about the other drop spindles and fleece you have at your tiny apartment halfway across the country! We're exotic! We're souveniers!"

I was duped again, assholes.

Now I have damned Mardi Gras wool. I actually think that's what the colorway is called.

Moving on.

I really don't know what I do wrong but I have seen these other blogs with women who have the exact same amount of roving as I, but end up with quite a bit of yarn. I, unfortunately, do not. In my mind I think this further illustrates why I need a spinning wheel. But can I afford one?

NO!

I have been working a lot, a lot, a lot. I've been seeing really cool places, though. Its a shame that bats are being quite elusive this season though. It makes for frustrating nights spent in chest waders wishing. OH! I got a new work truck and, boy is she a beaut! A 2002 Chevy Trail Blazer. It is equipped with an in-cab Forest Service radio (which makes me the actual shit, FYI) AND a cd player (I'm the shit 2x). I'm not going to lie and pretend that I don't love driving it. Its big! It has federal government plates! It has 4-wheel drive! It has a gas card that allows Uncle Sam to buy my gas. Yes, it guzzles, especially compared to my Nissan Sentra, but I think its great. Don't judge, I need it.

What's happenin' Post 110?

Not much here. I am finally back from my journey. Yes a journey. I drove (alone) about 1951 miles (and a few feet) in less than a week. I visited Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Indiana. I thought I should have just hit Ohio, too, but it just seemed too desperate.

In Athens (well just outside of Athens) I shopped at Main Street Yarns where I bought some Art Yarns superwash merino to make my... VERY FIRST CLAPOTIS! Being that I am the only person left in the world who hasn't knitted this scarfy wrap deal I thought I should and the colorway will be perfect for the fall. I think.

I also picked up some merino/mohair blend fleece the color they call "Jamaica." Of course this is the souvenier fiber, so it is locally dyed (I think, yes). At any rate, it is so pretty and I should have remembered to take a picture. I want it to spin beautifully, and this is something I cannot accomplish with a drop spindle. Who wants to give me a wheel? I can't afford one. Or is there someone rich that wants to marry me instead, so that they can support my addiction? If you are reading this blog and you can keep me in yarn for the rest of my life and you are willing to front me a $500 spinning wheel go ahead and leave a comment and we can talk. I will tell you that I am impressed if you are a gentleman who got through all of that yarn babble... but I digress.

I made a snap decision to go to Blacksburg Virginia, where Jessie lives with her very own brewmaster, Jason. You remember Jessie, right? The one with the moved pizza blog. Right. Moved next to the beer. Follow the link.

Her yarn store destroyed the theory I had about local yarn stores. Let me tell you the theory. No one will ever love you like your LYS loves you. No matter how far and wide you travel, you will usually be given the cold shoulder when you travel to a foreign store because there is certain trepidation about whether or not the customer is serious about knitting or not. Now its not to say that its the REAL cold shoulder, just cold by knitter standards. Maybe it is just me though. I know I don't look like I would be a typical knitter. I know, a lot of younger girls are doing it now and they are knitting garter stitch scarves for their boyfriends, and that's all well and good, but I am more serious than that. Mosaic yarn shop in Blacksburg Virginia crushed that theory. First, can I tell you that had a DOG in the store. I LOVE dogs. They were all super sweet, they offered help very frequently, and they complimented me on the felted entrelac bag quite a few times. They said I had good taste, too. Its true. I do. I was really impressed by their charity knitting too. Hokie Healing. When I was in the shop they had over 2000 squares in Hokie colors. Their plan is to sew the squares together and make blankets for the victims' families. It was a little emotional to see all of the squares. I'll tell you something about Blacksburg, too. That place is awesome. I will admit I was nervous that it would be scary and very very depressed, what with their recent tragedy. It wasn't really like that. They are really trying to get through it, and I think they are doing a great job. Its there, kind of looming, but you don't relly feel like asking questions about it yet, but it seemed like it has so much to offer (mmmm Gillie's). Also, look what they did while I was visiting. I think that is neat.

Okay so yesterday I drove 12+ hours by myself in my car then I went out until really late (I stayed awake 24 hours in a row, y'all) there is something about wiffle ball, dance parties and beers that take the tired away. But it turns out that is just momentarily, today it's back. Also, can I tell you to please go buy the new Wilco album "Sky, Blue, Sky." Now. I will take a nap in the mean time.

Laterz.
